Santa Paula Airport thriving after devastating flood

Two years after floodwaters ravaged the Santa Paula Airport (KSZP), the local flying and non-flying communities are once again enjoying all that this quaint little airport has to offer. Ironically, the airport--long a haven for antique airplanes and those who restore and fly them--got its start because of a flood. Following the flood of 1928, several local pilot-ranchers purchased land along the Santa Clara River. The privately owned, public use airport was officially dedicated in 1930, and except for a few scares over the decades, river and airport had peacefully coexisted--until February 2005.

According to Airport Association President, Rowena Mason, In the initial weeks after our runway washed out to sea, the future of the airport remained a huge question mark. But a lot of wonderful people came together and worked extremely hard to get our airport fully operational again.

Herman's burglarized; liquor, televisions taken

FAYETTEVILLE -- Employees at Herman's Ribhouse on College Avenue showed up for work Tuesday and discovered a door had been taken off the hinges, and thousands of dollars worth of liquor, as well as a big-screen and smaller television, were missing. An antique cash register was also destroyed.Nick Wright, manager chef, said employees called him about 9 a.m. The employees found the door to the prep room taken off the hinges and decided to wait outside for Wright and police to arrive."Nothing like this has ever happened before, as long as I've been here. I've been here for 10 years," Wright said.Wright said someone climbed over the fence surrounding the patio to get to the prep door. He said the thieves also found the key to the cooler in the prep room but didn't take anything except the lock to the cooler door.

Quebec's countryside ideal site for French class

If you've longed to open the dusty files of college French languishing in the back of your mind, the French-immersion program at the Auberge Schweizer in the quaint town of Sutton in Canada's Quebec province is perfect.

Even if you don't speak a lick of French and don't want to learn, there are many reasons to go to the auberge (inn).

Such as the delicious, healthy food: organic vegetables from the large garden, which flourishes just outside the kitchen; soothing country soups; freshly baked bread; and homey desserts, such as blueberry cobbler.

Or the pastoral setting: a scenic backdrop of 130 acres of maple trees, ponds, hiking trails, rolling hills, blue skies, golden sunsets and clean air.

Or the feeling of being engulfed in nature: Flowers bloom. Horses graze, gallop and roll in the lush grass.
