A month of love

BROOKFIELD - "Anything worth doing is worth overdoing" is Beth Grbichs philosophy when celebrating Valentines Day.

A tour of her house in Brookfield illustrates this motto. On display in her home are vintage and reproduction Valentines Day cards, homemade valentine cookies, red vases and candles, and numerous other decorations.

As a member of the Oconomowoc Area Questers Society, Heritage Trails, Grbich opened her house to about 25 society members and friends last week. For each of her guests, she prepared a handmade valentine box filled with sweets.

Included were Grbichs handmade cookies baked from a Bavarian recipe that dates back to the 1600s. She also decorated them with edible vintage valentine postcard designs and colored frosting. These are her pride and joy.

HGTV program to pay a visit to Hilton Head, surrounding areas

The weekly series "If Walls Could Talk," which is broadcast Sundays on HGTV, is coming to Hilton Head Island and surrounding areas to film homes with intriguing pasts, unusual stories and valuable objects found inside.

The series kicks off with new homeowners who make surprising historical discoveries about their homes as they explore and restore them. Each half-hour episode features homeowners from across the country who share their discoveries.

Recent stories include:

• A Connecticut family who moved into a neglected 1800s Victorian only to find antiques and a mysterious locked cabinet. What they find inside tells the touching story of their home's original owner. Then, in the attic they discover original paintings and the "If Walls Could Talk" appraiser pays them a visit.

Planned Thrift Store In Dispute

WESLEY CHAPEL - Residents of Lexington Oaks and Stagecoach say the main thoroughfare to their communities is looking more like unbridled commercial strips in Tampa - and they don't like it.

Dozens of residents of the moderate to upper-scale neighborhoods have complained to county commissioners, saying a proliferation of car dealerships along Wesley Chapel Boulevard in recent years was one thing. Now, a Salvation Army thrift store is planned across the street, next to the Hyundai dealership west of Interstate 75.

"I knew the Salvation Army was coming here, but I thought it was going to be across the street" from the Sweetbay Supermarket, said Peter Hanzel, chairman of Lexington Oaks Community Development District, referring to a commercial center closer to the interstate.
