New York retailer sues vagrants for sitting in front of his store
NEW YORK -- With its high-end shops such as Cartier, Prada and Gucci, Manhattan's Madison Avenue is no place for the homeless. At least, that's the view of Karl Kemp, owner of Karl Kemp and Associates Antiques, who has launched a $1-million lawsuit against four unnamed vagrants who have sought to ward off New York's recent bone-chilling temperatures by warming themselves over a grate in front of his shop. According to the lawsuit, the vagrants -- identified as John Smith, John Doe, Bob Doe and Jane Doe -- are driving away the store's well-heeled customers, causing Kemp to lose sales. In jockeying to feel the effects of the warm air rising from the small rectangular storefront grate this week, the four vagrants have impeded street views of Kemp's current window display, the centrepiece of which is a $26,000 19th-century mahogany Empire bench from Vienna, complete with lion-head carvings and cream-coloured upholstery.
Thieves get $1 million in antiques
WEST PALM BEACH -- Andrew Vogel was at the verge of tears when he spoke of his stolen trailer carrying 4,000 English antiques worth about $1 million. Vogel, 43, and his wife, Kelly, were staying at a tucked-away Hampton Inn Hotel near West Palm Beach last week and were headed back to Chicago after the Winter Antique Show in West Palm Beach. .
Antique details make 18th-century Captain Dunbar Home a unique offering
WEST BRIDGEWATER -- David and Liz McKeen recall being instantly drawn to the historical character of the Captain Dunbar Home, an Antique Colonial that dates back to 1799. "We just really always loved antiques," said Liz McKeen. As owners, they have worked to preserve many of the house's original details, including the wide pine floors, windows, and six fireplaces. They have also made some changes to bring the home into the 21st century. The modest kitchen area was once closed off from the first-floor family room, but the two spaces are now adjoined, separated only by a low wall. A sunroom in back of the house is used as a more informal living and play area. The first floor also includes the formal dining room, a bedroom, and an office. The three bedrooms on the second floor are organized around a large sitting area, similar to the first-floor family room.
Longtime member to sing praises of Franklin Silver Cornet Band
Franklin's Silver Cornet Band is shown gathered at the Conneaut Hotel in 1896. Peter Greene, historian for the band, will present a public program Thursday in Franklin about the band, including information about Grassy Nichols (the man sprawled in front), a vagrant who billed himself as the bandleader. The Franklin Historical Preservation Association will host Peter Greene for a presentation about the history of the Franklin Silver Cornet Band at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The program, open to the public will be held at DeBence Antique Music World in down town Franklin. Greene is a longtime member of the Franklin Band and serves as the group historian. Last year he published "Musical Service," a history of the band in celebration of its 150th anniversary. His program will include an overview of the band's history as well as views of many historic old photos of the band.
