Some win, some lose at 'Antiques Roadshow' knockoff

It now has a special place in his home, though Scott Slaughter doesn't let anyone sit in it - he keeps a rope across it for protection.

So he was a little disappointed to learn that other people don't think it's as valuable as he does.

"I wish I had a treasure so I could retire," he said after learning that his chair was worth only about $500.

The bad news was delivered to him by Stuart Whitehurst, an antiques dealer who was invited to appraise various items, including Slaughter's chair, at a fundraiser for the Andover Historical Society, held last night at the Unitarian Universalist Church off Main Street. Whitehurst has appeared on the public television show "Antiques Roadhouse," which inspired Historical Society members to create a similar event for their annual fundraiser.

Few struggling retailers are desperate enough to shut their doors on holiday shoppers. But as soon as December ends, the going-out-of-business sales begin.

Feb. 28 will be the last day at Wicks 'n' Sticks candle and fragrance shop in Westminster Mall, 303-650-5542, marking the end of a 20-year tenure. The shop's hard-to-find candles and related accessories are discounted by 25 percent to 75 percent.

This store is the last outpost of a Houston-based retailer that once had four stores in the metro area. If you're a fan, get over there before "your" item is all gone.

Shades of Yesteryear, which has been selling antique American oak furniture for 15 years, also is going out of business.

All pieces are marked down by 33 percent. The owner is in a haggling mood, however, because anything that remains on Jan.

"We have things you don't normally find at your everyday Walmart," Mary Szanyi-Coffey, owner of Zany Coffee and Collectibles, said.Zany Coffee, opened in November 2006, carries a vast array of unique collectibles such as Looney Tunes characters, Peanuts, Star Trek, Star Wars, classic cartoon characters and McDonalds character figurines. The store also sells handmade jewelry and artwork from local artists as well as music boxes from the San Francisco Music Box Company, Crazy Mountain Arts, Funko Toys, Silkstone Barbie dolls and consignment collectibles.As the name states, they also are a coffee shop carrying cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, hot chocolate, smoothies and frappes as well as a small selection of baked goods.Zany Coffee and Collectibles is open from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m.

Park Meadow getting new, remodeled stores

Four new stores are slated for spring openings at Park Meadows mall in Lone Tree, the center said Tuesday.

M.A.C. Cosmetics, which operates one store at Cherry Creek Shopping Center in Denver, plus several department store counters at Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Macy’s, will open its second Colorado store. The Apple Store, Aldo Shoes and Swarovski Crystals will also open this spring.

Additionally, Victoria’s Secret, Zumiez and Hot Topic are expanding their mall space, while others including Bath & Body Works and Brighton Collectibles are remodeling. Park Meadows and its owner, General Growth Properties Inc., have not yet announced any tenants for the 154,000 square feet of outdoor retail slated to open next year. .
