Antique brasses on valuable old tables, secretaries, buffets and breakfronts are not to be trifled with or their antique value might drop dramatically. Ever witness the heartbreak of hopefuls appearing on "Antiques Roadshow" when they're told that their furniture would have been worth $50,000, except for the lame hardware replacing the originals?

So don't go replacing any drawer pulls, hinges, cabinet doorknobs, locks or latches on family heirlooms or furniture purchased at auction. A new chest of drawers might benefit from a hardware upgrade or style switch, or most any piece from a flea market or yard sale.

And isn't it just too easy and fun to switch out the hardware on lesser items around the house, such as drawer knobs on a bedroom chest from childhood, or a piece of unfinished furniture you've nicely painted that's ready for some jewelry do-dahs on the drawers or doors?

Bona Decorative Hardware in Oakley always offered me plenty of choices for ceramic knobs of all colors, sizes and shapes - button-flat or spherical - and multiple metal selections - copper, brass, chrome, black iron, bronze-colored...

Groups salvage portions of antique Wausau home

Efforts are under way to salvage portions of a century-old home on the 600 block of Franklin Street prior to its demolition.

The home at 625 Franklin St. was built in the late 19th century by the late lumber baron John C. Smith, said Markus Szillat, a recent owner of the home. The three-story, Queen Anne-style home was converted to apartments decades ago, but valuable architectural elements remain.

Habitat for Humanity of Wausau has joined forces with Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Appleton to harvest materials from the home, including an antique wooden staircase, French doors, leaded windows and cast-iron radiators. The items will be put up for sale in Wausau before being transported to Appleton, where they again will be offered for sale.

It's part of a growing effort to salvage building materials, said Craig Fink, operations manager for the ReStore in Appleton.

Clean Out Your Clutter--Sell it on eBay

(Rochester, N.Y.) --  People who love antiques and flea markets can browse and buy without leaving the house by visiting the auction Web site eBay, which some call "the world's biggest garage sale."

Many others use the site to sell unique and valuable items to a worldwide audience.

Barbara Wolf never used the silverware she received as a wedding gift 44 years ago, so she decided to sell it on eBay.

"These things were dear to my heart and they were just sitting there," she said.

She made over $1,000 on the silver and has also sold a number of signed lithographs she and her husband acquired in the 1960s. But, she said, this isn't about the money.

"I'm enjoying myself, I'm having fun and I know they're finding homes," she said.
