Antique brasses on valuable old tables, secretaries, buffets and breakfronts are not to be trifled with or their antique value might drop dramatically. Ever witness the heartbreak of hopefuls appearing on "Antiques Roadshow" when they're told that their furniture would have been worth $50,000, except for the lame hardware replacing the originals?

So don't go replacing any drawer pulls, hinges, cabinet doorknobs, locks or latches on family heirlooms or furniture purchased at auction. A new chest of drawers might benefit from a hardware upgrade or style switch, or most any piece from a flea market or yard sale.

And isn't it just too easy and fun to switch out the hardware on lesser items around the house, such as drawer knobs on a bedroom chest from childhood, or a piece of unfinished furniture you've nicely painted that's ready for some jewelry do-dahs on the drawers or doors?

Bona Decorative Hardware in Oakley always offered me plenty of choices for ceramic knobs of all colors, sizes and shapes - button-flat or spherical - and multiple metal selections - copper, brass, chrome, black iron, bronze-colored...

Police find three antiques stolen from Minister's house

KUCHING: Police have recovered three antiques belonging to Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Datuk Effendi Norwawi which were stolen from his house last month.

Sarawak Deputy Commissioner of Police SAC I Datuk Kuik Harris said the antiques which included a sword and a keris, were found in a house in Kota Samarahan near here on Tuesday.

Several other items believed to be stolen were also found.

SAC I Kuik told a press conference at the Kuching police headquarters on Wednesday that the police were carrying surveillance on the house on Tuesday morning when a car carrying five men drove up to it.

When they realised there were policemen present, they sped away.

However, one of the men fell out of the car because the car door was open.

The man, a 30-year-old Indonesian, was arrested and when the house was searched the police found the stolen items.

Among the items seized were a computer, laptop, generator, cameras, guitar, serving tray and teapot.

Also seized were a pair of police shoes and a police raincoat, believed to be used by the gang to impersonate the police.

We are now hunting the remaining four suspects, believed to be one local and three Indonesians, SAC I Kuik said.

Saying good-bye to the past

After more than 10 years in business, Lake Forest Antique Mall, which leases spots to antique dealers, will close Jan. 31.

The 24,000-square-foot store has suffered drops in sales since 2004.

Owners Steve and Dennie Chaya attribute the loss of business to the increase of eBay shoppers and sellers. It's harder to find merchandise, and antiques are more costly, especially in Europe.

"We're really going to miss it," said Moreno Valley dealer Sharon Benson said as she purchased a rhinestone belt buckle and a small jeweled perfume bottle. "You can always find one of everything,"

The Lake Forest Antique Mall is facing the same problems as other similar businesses.

Limited supplies, a weak dollar and Internet auction sites have hurt the industry.
