At local antiques show, everything old is new again :
Annapolis is a city steeped in history, but this weekend the scope expanded beyond the state capital to the world with a cornucopia of rare and artful antiques. Everything from medieval European manuscripts to 18th- and 19th-century French and English barometers are for sale at the annual Historic Annapolis Antiques Show. "It's a great location," said dealer Philip Dubey of Baltimore. "Annapolis has got such history. It's a perfect place to (show) stuff off." The three-day event, which also includes plenty of unique furniture and art, concludes late this afternoon at Medford National Guard Armory. One of the show's 32 dealers hails from England and two are from Annapolis. The rest are from other parts of the country. "We like it here, it's very intimate," said Tom Dawson of Dawson Gallery in Annapolis, who has been a dealer at the show for about 17 of its 37 years.
Is Deepa ready for the Oscar walk?
What is the most important thing at the Oscars? The trophy. But there is something more important - the red carpet and the outfits that the film world struts in. Now that our very own filmmaker Deepa Mehta will walk the red carpet for her much 'talked about' film Water, she is also ready with her 'designer' walk. It is a Ritu Kumar design. "It wasn't difficult designing for Deepa as we share similar wardrobe tastes," says Ritu, who is also Deepa's cousin. Deepa will don a gold and silver Banarasi tissue sari. Here's the catch: The sari belongs to her mother and it is several decades old. She will team it with a full-sleeved antique brocade burgundy blouse, antique kundan set and mojris. Now, that's typical Ritu Kumar heritage! There's more. For the Vanity Fair party, the Governor's Ball and the Oscar Ball, "her look will be traditional but very individualistic." And what is Deepa's take? "Ritu didi used to design these really beautiful salwar kameez for my school functions.
Beazer Homes Begins First Phase of Building Plans In SouthWoodby Andy Lindstrom
Directly across the street from SouthWood's Town Center, one of the nation's largest home builders has started the first phase of what company officials call a master plan for the Northwest Florida market. Atlanta-based Beazer Homes, a Fortune 500 company that built almost 20,000 townhouses and single-family homes in 41 markets nationwide last year, plans to expand on that remarkable record with new projects in Tallahassee, Panama City, Destin and Fort Walton Beach. .
