Burglary Arrest

Items sold to a local Antique Shop tipped investigators off to a suspect in a string of burglaries in the Lynn Haven and Bay County area.

Investigators with the Bay County Sheriff's Office were working a burglary which occurred on January 18, 2007, in which a home was burglarized and a firearm, a Colt 45 Semi Automatic, was taken as well as coins and other items.

On January 29, 2007, the suspect went to two local Antique shops to sell two antique dueling pistols and some old coins. The pistols were purchased by the shop owner. Shortly afterward, officers from the Lynn Haven Police Department went to the shop, asking about certain items that had been taken in a burglary that occurred within the Lynn Haven city limits. The shop owner did not have those items, but did mention the pistols and old coins to the officers.

Editorial Observer Decoding the Debate Over the Blackness of ...

Those of us who were born black in the years just after World War II had front-row seats for the collapse of American apartheid. We started out confined to all-black communities and schools at a time when skin color was still destiny. But as segregation gave way, many of us were vaulted out of this sequestered world and into colleges, jobs and walks of life that had been closed to us pretty much since the nations founding.

The rush of upward mobility produced the inevitable identity crisis, which led in turn to endless discussions about the meaning of blackness in a world where skin color was beginning to matter less and less.

At their best, these discussions, held in college dorm rooms at night, were probing, serious and heartfelt. At their worst, they turned into lectures by the race police 60s-era ideologues who characterized blackness not as a matter of individual interpretation or choice, but as a narrow set of attitudes and experiences that were said to make up the authentic black identity.

Abraham Lincoln family portrait shows a lot of symbolism

A merica celebrates Abraham Lincoln's birthday on Monday, and "Honest Abe," still ranks among the most popular of U.S. presidents.

Steve Embree, of Grosse Pointe Woods recently brought in a piece of Lincoln memorabilia to learn more from appraiser Robert DuMouchelle of DuMouchelle Galleries in Detroit.

"My parents bought this from an antique dealer in the late 1960s in Detroit for less than $100," he remembers. Depicting the entire Lincoln family posing in a formal portrait, it's done in black and white with a depiction of Washington, D.C., in the background.

"It appears to be very old," Embree says. "On the bottom it lists everyone's name."

Measuring 22 by 28 inches without the frame, it also reads "published by Thomas Kelly, 264 Third Avenue between 22nd and 23rd St., New York." DuMouchelle says he has seen similar items before, but not one this size.
