Fire damage dooms building
The historic Monterey building that went up in flames Wednesday will be demolished, Monterey city officials said Friday. They gave neighboring shops the go-ahead to reopen their doors. Four structural engineers who assessed the T.A. Work Building at 467 Alvarado St. found that the 100-year-old structure was too badly damaged to be saved, said city building official John Kuehl. "I will be ordering the building completely demolished," Kuehl said. Bringing down the two-story structure won't be a simple ball-and-chain demolition. The building shares structural elements with next-door neighbors Monterey Antique & Gift Centre and Futons & Such. The building housed 21 shops and offices when fire ripped through the structure late Wednesday.
Chocolate lovers sweet on February holiday
By next Wednesday, pink and red flowers, cards and candy boxes will arrive at doorsteps, at offices and in mailboxes, as sweethearts and spouses engage in the annual St. Valentine's Day ritual of exchanging heartfelt sentiments that appeal to the heartstrings, as well as to the taste buds and the other senses. Chances are, those who lack a mate won't miss out on at least the sweet taste of the holiday. That includes those who give up candy for Lent, since Valentine's Day falls a week before Ash Wednesday. Valentine's Day, ranked behind Halloween, Easter and Christmas, is one of the chief candy-consuming occasions in the United States--particularly when it comes to chocolate. .
Metal artisan has seen the light
LAPORTE -- Bob Kopnicky thanks heaven above for shedding light on his true gift. The inventor and retired instrument technician was fascinated by antiques when he worked at Bethlehem Steel. He started collecting vintage lighting 15 years ago at antiques shows across the Midwest. Kopnicky amassed a collection of hundreds of chandeliers, Tiffany lamps, antique metal embellished lamps, desk sets, pendants, ceiling fixtures and antique hardware accessories. In fact, the metal artisan, who lives in LaPorte with his wife, Karen, is a serious collector. .
Rwanda: In Praise of the 'Losing' Football Fan
I met an Aston Villa fan at the Virunga Bar about two months ago. It was at that late point in the night when everyone in the vicinity is doing a lot more slurring than actual coherent speech. Anyway, I was talking football with a few friends outside the bar when he joined us and in the course of our debate let it be known that he was an Aston Villa fan and proud of it. Someone leapt out of the shadows and scolded him with the words "How can you support a lousy team like that?" before launching into a long speech about his own club's achievements. (If memory serves me right, the intruder was a Gunner.) .
