Saying good-bye to the past

After more than 10 years in business, Lake Forest Antique Mall, which leases spots to antique dealers, will close Jan. 31.

The 24,000-square-foot store has suffered drops in sales since 2004.

Owners Steve and Dennie Chaya attribute the loss of business to the increase of eBay shoppers and sellers. It's harder to find merchandise, and antiques are more costly, especially in Europe.

"We're really going to miss it," said Moreno Valley dealer Sharon Benson said as she purchased a rhinestone belt buckle and a small jeweled perfume bottle. "You can always find one of everything,"

The Lake Forest Antique Mall is facing the same problems as other similar businesses.

Limited supplies, a weak dollar and Internet auction sites have hurt the industry.

Catch the Acorn Antiques roadshow

Acorn Antiques was first seen on BBC Television 21 years ago and has been a firm favourite with the nation ever since. Catch the stage musical version in Preston from March 26 to 31.

The show follows Miss Babs' struggle to keep her antiques business open, as shop after shop in the High Street is forced out by faceless chains.

Can she afford to turn down the offer from The Guilty Bean, the world's second biggest chain of coffee shops> If they do update the shop, can they still afford to employ Mrs Overall?

Will Mr Clifford ever get his memory back, and remember to whom he's engaged?

And most worryingly, will Mrs Overall be able to tap dance while holding the tray?

This is a triumphant return to the stage for this new production following last year's 16-week sold-out run at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Take a peek inside the Antiques & Garden Show

It may not feel like it outside, but spring has sprung at the Nashville Convention Center, host to the 17th Annual Antiques and Garden Show of Nashville through Sunday.

The show features six elaborate gardens, created by Nashvilles leading landscape designers. In keeping with this years show theme, "Masterpiece, each garden is inspired by a famous painting from Sandro Botticellis 15th century Primavera to Grant Woods 1930 American Gothic.

Store owners weigh risks, benefits of city shops

After two decades of running an antiques and furniture business in York City, Dave Kerns said the stream of customers is steady and he's optimistic about the direction the city is going.

Next door, Renate Grim is getting ready to pack up her stained-glass studio, leaving a town she said never changes for the better.

A lot of things come into play as business owners mull whether to stay in the city, where they have the challenge of luring customers wary of restricted parking and the threat of crime. Though merchants face many of the same hurdles, they differ on whether they are optimistic, or at least hopeful, that the city is heading in the right direction for their businesses.

Renate Grim, owner of Don't Throw Stones, is planning to close the retail operation she and her husband, Daniel Grim, have operated six days a week for the past eight years.
