The free things that go with lunches
This is not like the US President saying "the jury is still out on global warming", but it still failed to convince certain members of my family. The lunches are not exactly free, but there are free things that go with lunches. We are not talking here of the sort of lunches and teas that people put on in order to get an audience or workshop participation. There is a strong belief in the region that if a thing is worth doing, it is worth putting on a feed for. An army commander may be able to get full attendance at a press conference by merely decreeing one. But other worthies know the media is a particularly difficult audience to woo and often throw in a munchie or two to sweeten the invitation. Let me not scoff, as you might say.
Engin Akın: Turkish cooking, handled with care
Chefs in expensive Istanbul restaurants cater to demand, and demand pushes them toward tasteless innovation. 'Innovation requires knowledge,' says Engin Akn. TOMMASO NELLI ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News Engin Akn's Istanbul residence is tucked in an alley a stone's throw from the Bosporus, and her huge living room windows look out over the passing ships. Antique embroideries, straight from the Sultan's palace, hang on the wall behind Perspex mounts. Her eyes are striking: warm, curious, enthusiastic and analytical. It is hard to imagine that this robe was a sultan's shaving cape. The embroidery calls to mind bishop mitres in Hungary and the Balkans, which in turn look like kaftans. Many objects in this spacious, comfortable and elegant house recall that trail of visual and tactile assonances that has strewn clues from China to Venice.

A classic love story for Valentine's Day
It's a classic love story. The cheerleader adviser and the head football coach meet and fall for each other in the high school halls. That story played out at Lebanon High School, where Warriors cheerleading coach Bethanie (Landis) and football coach Shawn Lamb met seven years ago. Both teachers in the social studies department, Shawn and Bethanie were friends for six years before their first date, the night of Lebanon High School's 2005 graduation. .
