| Break out the cigars: Cuba and media are looking good
It was our first Phantom Day Traders Great Investment Race meeting, and the day traders were fresh back from a few days off, fizzing with energy. Their ideas are vital in the race to beat the AussieAussieAussie Trading Syndicate. The winner is the first to turn $200,000 into $1 million, or end the year with the largest portfolio. The prize is lunch with Warren Buffett, or dinner with Scarlett Johansson. They haven't replied yet to our request, but we're confident. I'm this week's chair, as Professor Valerie Carr-Edwards, our ethical investment consultant, insists on calling me. I invited ideas. "Well, Bone," began Yogi, our senior chartist, "I reckon we oughta buy Telstra, Rural Press, Fairfax, News Corp, PBL, Reuters, Dow Jones and any other media stocks we can get our hands on.

There is no hesitation in Chris Huseman's voice when he predicts the third edition of the Quincy Breakfast Optimists Club Soap Box Derby will continue both in growth and popularity. "Since last fall, we have been getting phone calls from families about getting cars, from sponsors wanting to be a part of it ... the interest is just tremendous," said Huseman, the derby's director since the Breakfast Optimists gave new life in 2005 to an event that had been dormant for 39 years. This year's race is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 9 on the Tom Awerkamp bridge on 18th Street. "The way it looks right now, we're going to be every bit of 70 cars," Huseman said. "Some (families) are even buying two cars." The derby attracted 54 entrants last year after 34 took part in 2005.
CPHS seeks fundraiser participants
Area skiers, snowboarders and especially the non-skiing public are invited to take part in the ninth annual CPHS Ski for the Animals fundraising campaign to benefit homeless animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. A special ski-a-thon is under way with participants collecting pledges and vying for prizes for the top fundraisers. The grand prize this year will be a choice of either a two-night stay in a luxury condo at Blue Knob All-Seasons Resort, Pavia, or a season lift pass. Both prizes were donated by the resort, a prime sponsor of the campaign, along with Spokes n Skis, Lakemont. We hope this will be a major incentive in our fundraising efforts, said Dave Hopkins, CPHS director of fundraising/public relations. We had a very slow start with the lack of snow that has had a major impact on the ability of our school ski clubs to become involved as they have in the past.
