Last day of duck hunting time well spent

The last day of this year's duck season I did not go hunting, but I had just been hunting the day before with my old friend Tom Copeland Jr.

The last day is usually crowded so I decided to not go out on the water and sleep in.

When I woke up I told my wife of 24 years Deanna to get dressed because I was taking her out to breakfast for a home cooked meal at Helen's Kitchen. This is our favorite place to eat on an early Saturday morning. We get to see some of our friends while we have a great meal.

She really loves to eat there so I knew this would go over great with her. I think this is the first time in many years that I did not hunt on the last day of the season.

Any time that I spend with my wife is always time well spent. We are not just husband and wife but we are best friends and we enjoy going out to eat and shopping.

The rooms

Two clients with big wall space to fill in their family rooms wanted to make a dramatic statement without spending a fortune. The colors chosen for both rooms are warm, earth tones - golden browns, greens and bricky or terra cotta reds. Both clients ordered furniture through us and needed finishing touches.

Afternoon fire destroys garage, antique trucks

A fire on Bill Clark's farm near Boonville Thursday afternoon resulted in the loss of his garage, a couple of antique vehicles, and more. The call came in to the Cooper County 911 dispatcher about 4 p.m., and firefighters battled the blaze until after 6 p.m.Clark is unsure how the fire started.“I went outside to get the paper, and I didn't see or smell a thing," Clark said. “I went inside and read through the paper, and I was about to go take a shower when I saw smoke coming out. It was rolling out of there pretty good."

Vanishing physician scenario is a myth

For example, you have probably heard about how "junk lawsuits" are chasing doctors out of rural counties in Arizona. Again, not true. According to statistics maintained by the Arizona Supreme Court, medical malpractice suits over the past seven years in Arizona's rural counties typically make up less than 1 percent of all civil case filings. By way of example, from July 1999 to July 2005, Greenlee County reported three medical malpractice filings, Apache County reported only two medical malpractice filings in that seven year time frame, and Santa Cruz county reported only one medical malpractice filing.

We need a lot to make our health care system effective for patients and rewarding for doctors. But to do so, we need the most important thing. We need the truth.

He felt called to bring back gem's former glory

A home is more than just bricks and mortar, wood and nails. It's a private refuge where we find peace and comfort, spend time together with those closest to us and dream our dreams.

"I had renovated another house on Stanley Street and was looking for another old home. Paul Hayden of Relics Antiques (South Bend) suggested looking in this neighborhood. I saw this house from the outside and felt it was a gem in the rough. It had been a group home and had been kind of institutional, but when I walked in, I fell in love with it and felt I had to bring it back to its glory. It was built in 1895.

"I bought it in May 2005 and have gutted two-and-a-half baths and the kitchen. I love the kitchen. ... It's a huge eat-in kitchen. It had had the washer and dryer in there, and that wasn't working for me.
