Snow both boosts and blasts local businesses

For some owners, the weather provided an excuse for a stolen day off; for others, it actually brought a heavier, or slightly different, flow of customers into their stores.

Snow and antique sales didn't mix well.

Jeff Nelson, of Le Stuff Antique Mall, said he opened for just a few minutes and, after talking with the nearby business owners, decided to shut down. "I could get more work done closed," he said, explaining he spent the day catching up on paperwork.

Steve Stratford likewise made a last-minute decision not to open his restaurant and antique store at the corner of Main and Second Avenue. He said business is usually terribly slow on bad weather days, and Wednesday's beginning thaw hadn't been enough to turn it around.

Some stores shut completely and remained closed Wednesday: Let's Play toy store, Kathy's Knit Korner and MIR.

A PEEK BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Sensuous design lies in the details: By adding a very personal accent or two, we can turn bedrooms into intimate havens. Here are ways some local homeowners made their bedrooms special.

Color counts

"I've fallen in love with these jewel tones," said Faye Young, looking at the deep golds and ruby reds of her small but sumptuous master bedroom. "Most people start with a piece of furniture or a rug, but I always start with the walls. Paint comes first and sets the mood."

Muralist and faux-finish artist Jeanne Chauffe used a reddish-gold plumb-line technique on the bedroom walls. "The lines fall down the wall like rain, creating a shimmering effect," she said.

"Everything fell into place from there," Young added.

Chauffe put a gold-leaf finish on the crown molding and a soft cloud effect on the ceiling to give the room a glow.

Houstonist Flickr Photo of the Day - Action

At first look one might get the impression this is some sort of weapon-locking system. A fair assumption given that most antiques in the Houston area are gun related. This is no weapon, unless you're strong enough to swing it around and bludgeon someone.

This is an antique film projector at the Heights Station antique shop in the Heights. It looks great in sepia with the macro focus. We imagine that everything that happened in past was sepia with a really narrow focus range. It's why there were so many car accidents.
