City, sign owner hang together
The antique sign that hangs outside the Cabbages and Kings Antique Mall is stable enough - for now. The Crawfordsville Board of Works and Public Safety voted at its meeting Wednesday in the city council chambers to allow building owner Dick Howell to continue with plans for repairing the sign. Howell also asked for city building inspector Don Lang to re-evaluate the possible dangers the sign and canopy at 124 S. Washington St. poses. An electrical transformer inside the sign, which protrudes from the building over the sidewalk, broke and fell through the bottom of the sign in December. Lang inspected the site then and also found the canopy from the building in need of repair. "(Canopy) has some dents and dings in it," Howell told the board. "But it's pretty solid." Howell added he would have to apply for an historical building grant of some kind if it needed repair because of the cost.
RC2 Reports Lower than Expected 2006 Fourth Quarter and Year-End ...
OAK BROOK, Ill.--RC2 Corporation today announced lower than expected preliminary net sales. Net sales from continuing operations for the fourth quarter of 2006, which excludes the trading card and sports collectibles business which was sold on November 1, 2006, were flat to slightly down versus the prior year fourth quarter net sales from continuing operations of approximately $154 million. Net sales from continuing operations for the 2006 year increased approximately 5% compared with the prior year net sales from continuing operations of approximately $493 million. As previously announced, the increased cost of zinc, which is a key component in die-cast products, is expected to result in lower profit margins during the fourth quarter of 2006 compared with the fourth quarter of 2005.
Tractor pull, antique equipment at fairgrounds this weekend
The livestock arena at the fairgrounds plays host to powerful tractors this weekend, straining to pull a stubborn sled across the dirt before the weight overcomes them and they bog down. The tractor pull also includes an antique tractor show, garden tractors and a youth tractor race. There will be food vendors and free parking. A tractor pull pits a powerful tractor against a mechanical weight, called a sled, which is attached to the back of the tractor. As the pull begins, a slab of metal on the sled slides toward the tractor, making it more difficult for it to gain traction. If the tractor driver is successful, he or she will pull the sled across the finish line for a full pull. If not, the sled is the victor and the tractor's rear wheels bog down.
