MOA hosts Burnside Expedition Symposium

In February, 1862 the famous Union Gen. Ambrose Burnsides made Civil War history in northeast North Carolina. With an assault on Confederate strongholds on Roanoke Island and other area outposts, Burnside had successfully captured the region and placed it under federal control.

Friday and Saturday historians will gather at Museum of the Albemarle to discuss "this often overlooked aspect of the American Civil War," according to a museum brochure. Overlooked but significant — northeast North Carolina served as a launching point for Union attacks on interior North Carolina and parts of Virginia — scholars will discuss various aspects of the "Burnside Expedition."

The event's keynote speaker is Dr. Richard A. Sauers, "a recognized authority on the Burnside Expedition and author." Sauer's books include "A Succession of Honorable Victories: The Burnside Expedition in North Carolina."

The two-day MOA event will kick off Friday at 6 p.m.

Marcheta Dixon and her husband of 49 years own La Rose on Main Antique Mall. Ruby red glass given to her when she was a young bride started a collection that has blossomed into a business filled with treasures from the past such as extensive sports memorabilia, quilts, glass and antique Montgomery County promotional items. The Dixons have raised foster children over the years and have two sons, Brian and Jeff.

If you could have dinner with any three people (living or dead), who would they be and why?

This is what I would like more than anything in the world, to eat with my dad Raymond.
